As a former native of suburban Philly--I went to high school in Souderton, PA, near Lansdale--I can tell you why New Jersey's road signage is so bad: IT'S NEW JERSEY!
NJ is truly the armpit of America!

It really is shockingly bad signage. I had directions from where my conference was that said "get off at X exit" but THERE WAS NO X EXIT!!!! lol
