The Battle of the Sexes is Over...and the Chicks Have Won

Or at least that's what this calendar says:

I found this calendar on the clearance rack at my Barnes and Noble today. What words could I use to describe it? Disgusting? Ridiculous? Insulting? I am at a loss, so I'll resort to sarcasm.

See, women's hearts are in the right place and men, well, we know the only thing they think about ;)

Men are losers, it's just that simple.

Boys are just like animals (it is soooo distressing to us girls!)

Boys, better seen than heard.

Dudes = ZERO, get it?

Sigh... so sorry boys, even in my most generous and helpful nature and superior wisdom I can't help you fix your stupidity.

Maybe boys aren't better seen than heard....I crack myself up!

Boys should be under a chick's control! (and buy me jewelry!)

You're so pathetic even begging won't help!

Short = less, don't you know?

Boys, so helpless with the all important fashion.
Make yourself useful and spend money on me!

I looked, and there was no "DUDES RULE" version, not that I thought there actually would be. That would be misogynist don'cha know!

New Year's Find

Every few years I like to read the Bible through in a year because there are just some books (mostly minor prophets like Nahum) I never read otherwise. I thought it was about time to do that again, so I have been searching for my One Year Bible since New Year's. Yesterday when I was searching for it I found this little prayer book that I haven't seen since I lived in Tennessee.

Someone recently asked me about how I came to belief in Christ, I was reminded of this little book and how it fits into that story. So, when I came across it yesterday, I looked at it again instead of putting it aside.

I received it when I was a very small child. I remember looking at this little book while sitting in Mass with my parents, with my mom wearing her lace head covering, and me sitting on the kneeler and facing the pew as though it was a table or desk. There are crayon markings on some of the pages.

You can also tell how old the book is because the priest is still facing the altar with his back to the church during Mass.

The book contains elements of the Mass ....

...and prayers ....

....and "my little rules" :)

I remember being a child and reading this book over and over with a desire to be close to God. I remember being very aware of all of my sins and being fearful that no matter what I did that I would never be good enough on my own to be close to God and "earn" heaven. I remember feeling Pascal's "God shaped hole" and having no idea how to fill it other than being a good Catholic girl and reading my little prayer book.
When I was 20 years old God showed me that I was right, no matter what I did I would never be good enough on my own to be close to God and "earn" heaven. He also showed that God has made a way for us to have fellowship with Him through the forgiveness of our sins by the blood of Christ. After 22 years it continues to amaze me. I thank God for His mercy in showing me this truth.
And, yes, I found my One Year Bible shortly after I found the prayer book. Now, I just have to get caught up!

Wow

Wow, a laptop with actual visible letters on the keys! And a power cord that doesn't need to be held very gingerly and at a specific yet ever changing angle in order to work! WooHoo! (and a thank you to my parents for their contribution toward this for Christmas).

While I'm posting photos, here's one of my niece opening a gift from my brother and his girlfriend.

And here's one of my "other niece" (my brother's great dane) playing with my gift to her. She is getting even bigger. She jumped up on me and with her paws on my shoulders her head is above mine.

Happy New Year!

Was 2008 a good year for you? I hope that you can look back on 2008 and see many good things. I am blessed to be able to say that I can. In some ways it was a difficult year, but I can look back on those difficulties and see that God used them to help me grow. I am, however, ready to leave 2008 behind me and to move forward in 2009, which I anticipate to be a good year.
  • In 2009 my sister and brother-in-law will formally and legally adopt my niece.
  • In 2009 I will finish my dissertation (I pray!) and graduate with a PhD. I am considering changing my Blogger ID to "Dr. Yes girl" at that time ;)
  • I hope that very early in 2009 I will recover from this cold/flu/sinus infection/virus thing that has been kicking my hiney for almost three weeks. I have been coughing so much that my ribs (actually probably my intercostal muscles) hurt like crazy when I breathe/cough.

Happy New Year Everyone!
